I rode in the heat wave today: did you?

Anyone else brave the heat and ride? Took a backroad route over near Greenville, SC to a motorcycle dealership. Just wanted to sit on a few different ones in comparison to the ergos of my 2004 CBR. But main objective was the route and scenery consisting of water falls, farms and pastures, mountains and good ole curvy roads. Of interest today was the GSXR 1000 which certainly feels less cramped than mine, now I just need one that I can ride for about 100-200 miles and see how I feel afterwards. Looked at models ranging from 07-09. I know comfort and sportbike are not meant to be used in the same sentence but the Hondas are definitely more Pedrosa sized.

I plan to keep a liter bike in the garage always, just want to have one that is a bit more comfortable than what I have. With that said I've discovered some footpegs that would at least allow me to lower the peg position on mine which should help quite a bit, so I'm gonna order them and give them a shot. Pegs are from Cycle Pirates and offer quite a bit of adjustability.

They were on an 07 ZX10 on the show room floor and I was able to compare the feel to another stock zx10 so if I can get the same feeling from my CBR I'd likely be content for awhile.

Heat was never even a concern for me, did not really keep track of mileage but would estimate about 145-150 miles today.

Any 07-current year GSXR 1000 fans in here?

Captain Morgan 07-23-2011 09:26 PM

Not today, but I did Thursday.

101lifts2 07-23-2011 11:37 PM

I'll ride tomorrow...supposed to be around 95.

Yes the Gixxer will be the most comfy...but the Kawi is not far behind. Gixxers are usually more comfy because you sit in the bike, not on it. The Kawi, though is the same way...you sit in it.

Rangerscott 07-23-2011 11:52 PM

Riding in the heat is no problem. It's being stopped and remembering to stop every once in awhile to drink.

thirdgenlxi 07-24-2011 12:13 AM

I indeed rode today.... went to Little Mountain Farm Supply store in Tryon to buy dog food, then took 9 into Lake Lure and 64 back to my house. It was definitely hot but somewhat tolerable. I chugged down a big gatorade about halfway through, lol

Particle Man 07-24-2011 09:00 AM

I rode almost all of last week when it was 95+

...yesterday, though, my fat ass sat in the pool all day.

pauldun170 07-24-2011 10:48 AM

Agreed on the GSXR1K. That thing (09) fit me great.
As for the heat...screw that. I'm in a non perforated leather Jacket and jeans. I'm in the house before the sun gets to high in the sky and temps go into the 90's

w/o question I'd rather have a CBR like yours, but I know it's a bit cramped.

That was a good route, I was in Tryon and Saluda for a bit yesterday as well.

I used my camelback so I didn't have to bother stopping to drink.

Gas Man 07-24-2011 11:56 PM

I did not... haven't had time, been working too much with too much other crap going on. Plus the heat... all equals no riding. Oh well....

fujimoh 07-25-2011 09:59 AM

I rode about 150 miles with a couple of other riders on Sunday.

Got sprinkled on a couple of times, and I have to admit it felt good

It had to be hot and humid in Florida

KSGregman 07-25-2011 11:31 AM

It's been 100+ for at least 2 or 3 weeks straight...I ride after work...and on the week-ends...but haven't been riding to work as much as it's miserable to sit on that thing after it's sat out in the parking lot all day and every component on it is super heated. :lmao:

marko138 07-25-2011 11:38 AM

Nope. Haven't even started my bike during the month of July.

It's been over 100 here every day for the past 3-4 weeks. If I didn't ride in the heat, I wouldn't get to ride at all, so yeah, I ride in the heat.

tallywacker 07-25-2011 10:27 PM

I really don't consider the temperature too much when I decide to ride unless it's really cold.

Rangerscott 07-25-2011 11:26 PM

It's been a heat wave since april here. I'll continue to ride in my 3 digit temps but you pussies pack up when it hits 60f for months. Snow ride or GTFO!

I pack it up when it hits 40 degrees. Too many times getting into the shower hoping to bring feeling into my balls again. Cold gas tanks FTL

In the 1950's, thick, clear-plastic seat covers were the rage. I remember as a kid riding back from the beach in the back seat. The covers were so hot, they gave a sunburn through your clothes. But that was from sitting. You have to straddle a hot motorcycle seat. That's why I wear leather pants.

Leather pants on a 95 degree day is crazy, right? Crazy like a fox. Sitting on the hottest saddle, brushing up against a hot, black, metal gas tank, or extreme heat (double the air temp) from a hot engine with leather pants is no worries. Riding with jeans would fry several sensitive areas. Leather pants FTW.

Krabill 07-26-2011 10:06 AM

My local forecast . . . it's only going to be 100 on Friday! I might have to turn on my heated grips.

Our heatwave broke the other day, fortunatley it was only a few days, not the marathon heat you guys have been dealing with, It was 68 degrees riding in today, I thought I would need my gerbings LOL

I try to avoid riding in the high heat days but a day like today is ok since I am working a double. Leaving home at 6am and going home at 11pm it will be cool out.

KSGregman 07-26-2011 11:07 AM

No help in sight.....

Adeptus_Minor 07-26-2011 11:12 AM

I haven't ridden the motorcycle since about April or May, but I've been pedaling which...while being lighter in gear... requires considerably more physical exertion and yields less wind to cool me off.

Yes...it's getting a little scary as the sources of drinking water are drying up. The wheat crop was shit...the corn crop is completely destroyed....I've heard some farmers saying they aren't even going to plant soybeans or milo this year.

Not sure how this story can end well if it doesn't rain...a lot....SOON.

Scary shit, we havent had much rain here either, not to that level obviously but we had a small fire at the house sun night and the dryness probably accelerated it. We still dont know how it started.

Krabill 07-26-2011 02:32 PM

My neighbor's trees are starting to loose their leaves. They're turning brown and falling off. It looks like fall on my street.

On a good note, though . . . not only am I still riding in this heat, I stopped by the local Honda dealership to pick up some parts at lunch time today and got to take the new VFR1200 for a test ride. Sweet, sweet bike.

Yeah, the house next door to me burned down (up?) about a week ago. It was freaky how fast that place went up. House, yard, fence, trees...all caught fire super fast.

That one was a back deck charcoal grill left unattended. :td:

I was in Riverside Park downtown over the week-end....walking around enjoying some outdoors time (despite the heat) after a long week in the office....and couldn't help but notice that it "felt" like late August....the grass is shot...the trees are all tired and losing their leaves....the ground felt like walking on concrete....I can't even imagine what it will be like if we get a typical August...another 30 days of 100+ and no rain...it's already a disaster...but that will feel like a kill shot, I think.

20s for me since I got the Gerbings G3's

I rode today and wore my Teknic leather jacket. My shirt was drenched when I got home

I have an Olympia mesh jacket but I feel naked wearing it after getting used to all the armor in the teknic

Krabill 07-27-2011 09:19 AM

Doing some maintenance on my bike in the garage yesterday and did a quick to the end of the street and back test ride in my shorts and a t-shirt. Oh, that felt good. I might have to give up on wearing gear. Ok . . . not really

We would have had a record number of days in a row over 100. EXCEPT, we had two days at 99. Pfffffffffft, we can't even do record temps right

I was in Minnesota for a week. I kept laughing because they all kept saying "heat index." I swear, they use that and "wind chill "just to make it seem more impressive. Anything over 100 is just plain hot.

heat index does make a huge difference because of humidity. That was clear the last fiddy race, it was about 5-10 degrees cooler than the time before, but the humidity from the rain that just went through made it seem much much worse than the time before.

I know where it comes from. Their dew point [on average] is about 60 points higher than ours. My point is, 105 is effing hot whether it's 12% humidity or 80% humidity.

Tropical Storm Don is hopefully going to spin some our way. It's a long-shot, but it's a shot.

30% chance, I'm not going to hold my breath. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/78666

It's sad when we get excited over ANY chance of rain on the forecast.

tallywacker 07-28-2011 10:39 AM

I had 111 on my dash last week here in PA, this heat wave is pretty big. We also had a big snow storm last winter, the two usually go hand in hand.

Fleck750 07-28-2011 10:51 AM

People ask me if I'm hot on the bike with all that gear. I wear a mesh jacket, so no, I'm not hot. And compared to driving a vehicle with no air conditioning it's bliss.

I drive my p/u once a week to the store to keep the battery charged but ride the bike to work every day. 30% of rain tonight, it'll feel good on the bike. :D

MikeSP1 07-28-2011 09:02 PM

I rode in that crap, a lot

Stormed HARD in Wichita last night....a little ovah 2" of rain in about a half hour....along with some 70mph straight line winds. At this point, some wind damage is a reasonable trade for some much needed rain.

I finally took off my luggage from last weekend and cleaned the chain so I could ride today. It wouldnt be so bad if the wind didnt feel like a blow dryer in your face. Temps would be better if there wasnt 10,000 miles of concrete/asphalt and shingles every where.
