Raining at Indy

Looks like we are going to get wet at the races and rained on the whole way up and back. Suck....

marko138 09-07-2008 01:25 PM

Hurtball.

t-homo 09-07-2008 01:27 PM

Fuckin cool. Hopefully this shit changes before the weekend.

Captain Morgan 09-07-2008 02:48 PM

That sucks. But if you've ever lived in Indiana, you know not to trust the weather folks until the weather actually occurs. Even then, the weather can change on a dime. See you all this weekend. Call me when you all get into town and I'll meet up with you. I'm off all week before and after.

frick. why cant i get a decent day to ride every time i go on a 500 mile trip. Good thing my rain gear doubles as a poncho... cause it basically is.

at least the odds of a nice crash are gonna be DRAMASTICALLY increased in bad weather.

azoomm 09-07-2008 03:37 PM

Awesome!! Rain races are the BEST!! It takes the mechanical factor out and makes it about the last man standing... so much more about skill.

Nope, but in FL the weather changes every 30 minutes!!

Its sunny and you want rain? Wait 30 mins!

Weatherman says its going to be raining all day? Its sunny outside while he's talking!

I dont put any stock in weather reports...

Mr Lefty 09-08-2008 06:04 PM

ehh wtfe... I could care less... just hope it's clear thursday at the gap and surrounding area

but it's been supposed to rain every day of my trip every where I've gone... other than the two hour down pour in AR... it's been fuck'n perfect!...

we'll see...

Trip 09-08-2008 06:30 PM

i bought rain pants and already had a poncho to go over my leathers just in case

Mr Lefty 09-08-2008 06:50 PM

i know how that feels. just put the boots on the airconditioner when you get to the hotel though, and its ALL good.

PiZdETS 09-09-2008 10:08 PM

pretty ghey. I have diablo corsa 3's which trip and several others informed me were horrible in the wet. Fuuuuck I might be driving. :(

And the race will be nuts. Newly paved track where everyone has little experience + rain = wrecks and wet riding heroics. Stoner will lowside halfway through the race regardless of weather but it'll still be fun to watch.

idk, i had 'em on the buell and went thru a crazy rain storm, the street looked like a river.

A few other times in "normal" rain as well.
They aren't bad as long as you aren't trying to be Rossi while its raining.

Trip 09-09-2008 10:14 PM

the corsa IIIs are fine in the rain if you arent trying to run fast laps. Just don't do anything stupid and you will be fine.

they were horrible in the rain for me because I was at the track, not on the street.

oic. Well I'm a bitch when it comes to wet riding, especially on twisties so I'll probably still drive.

most of us are parking in the moto parking lots. We aren't going to be hitting the twisties in the rain, I don't ride twisties in the rain. Just wait til we get to cincy and meet us there. We will be riding flat straight roads from there.

Motorcycle Fatalities Expected To Spike During MotoGP
IMS: City Could See Dozen Bike Deaths

POSTED: 5:41 pm EDT September 9, 2008
UPDATED: 7:17 pm EDT September 9, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sunday's MotoGP race will bring motorcycles to the track and to Indianapolis roads, where police have been told to expect a spike in bike-related fatalities.

As many as 100,000 spectators will converge on Indianapolis for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP MotoGP, and at least a third of them are expected to arrive by motorcycle, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

Based on the experiences of other cities that have hosted MotoGP events, Indianapolis Motor Speedway security officials have warned police that the number of fatality accidents involving motorcycles could end up in the dozens.

"I know in other cities the GP race there always seems to be an increase in fatalities as far as motorcycles," said Indianapolis police Capt. Mike Bates. "It's a potential for disaster, or at least an increase in crashes."

Indianapolis police have planned extra patrols to target risky driving and will be using state police Mustangs and motorcycles to provide some extra horsepower to their enforcement.

"We have actually organized a couple of crash teams specifically designed to deal with motorcycle accidents and crashes," Bates said.

This year, 11 people have died in motorcycle accidents in Indianapolis.

t-homo 09-10-2008 03:04 PM

This is bad. Indy, a town of 875,000 has 11 motorcycle fatalities, and Spingfield, MO, a town of 130,000 has 8 motorcycle deaths.

No, I'll be in 4. Haven't had the money to spend on a bike, so I've been in 4 during the last 3+ years.

Well, duh. Increase the number of motorcycles and you're going to increase the number of accidents, some of which will sadly be fatal. Part of it will be because people are watching racing and have no self control after seeing someone else ride fast. The other part is simply because you have a bunch of motorcycles when cagers aren't used to seeing them that much.

Right...that's common sense but part of the reason I posted it is for any of you hotdogs that may want to play around while riding to watch for the extra Mustangs and bikes with LEO's on board...hate to see any of you get pulled and then somebody say "well duh"... :idk:

God I'm retarded. I've been packing and tweaking my suspension all evening.
Any idea when they're doing free practice on Friday, I'd definitely like to catch some of that. They usually give extended sessions when at a track for the first time.

It's a 4 hour ride. Supposed to be dry here when I leave, and wet when I get there. I can get a set of rain gear for $116. :idk: Worth it? My leather pants were only $170.

PiZdETS 09-11-2008 09:50 AM

hmmmm....thundershowers next 5 days in Indy.
I'm considering caging it up there....I'll decide on Friday last minute.

If I do ride up there that means no bars unless it's within walking distance of the hotel. Yeah I'll admit it, I'll have a couple beers and drive 5 minutes in a car but I don't even sit on a bike if I've been drinking. And I do want to drink while I'm at the races and walking around the pits looking at GP bikes during qualifying and free practice. Indy sells these big burly Fosters cans of beer for 5 bucks each and I two-handed those bastards when I went there for F1 races. I've been waiting to get liquored up and talk shit to Pedrosa for YEARS. Cocky diminutive spanish bastard.
It's also probably gonna be apeshit with all the bikes in the rain. Cops will be pulling bikes over for nothing when there's eleventyfourteen lowsides on the first day when it starts raining on the streets surrounding the track.

Buuut, if I drive that means I'll be that asshat having to explain to everyone that I ride but I was too much of a pussy to ride up even though it's only like a 3 hour ride from my house.
I get to bring more shit with me though and some beer for the hotel room. Plus I could probably haul a couple of you folks to and from the hotel if you don't feel like riding to the track in the rain each day or if you wanna drink.

Sigh..fucking rain.

I'm with you. I wont have a single drop when I'm riding, but I will have a beer or 2 when I drive. So I'm only having beer at the hotel if I'm there for the duration of the evening, at a bar that is walking distance to the hotel or I'm taking a cab. I just dont risk it on 2 wheels.

screw it. go get a jakcet and rainproof pants at wal-mart for 20 bucks otd. thats what i did, and i never get a drop of water on me. i would suggest investing in a good pair of water resistant gloves though, that makes more difference than anything. i got some Joe Rockets for like 50 bucks

The main concern is the track surface and how much grip it will have in the ever changing weather. The tyre engineers spoke of the several different levels of grip around the track. One cited Turn Three as having three changes within the one corner, and cracks in the pavement which could be significant for the 125 riders. The task is how to best balance the grip and the tyre to make the best compromise. MotoGP riders hoped the 125 riders, who went out first, used their soft tyres to lay down rubber.

The track surface varies from corner to corner and indeed within a couple of the corners, with stretches of asphalt being laid at different times.
