Post up your GPS mounts

What are you all doing for mounting your GPS units? I've looked and I just don't see anything yet that I like for mounting mine so I am thinking something custom/home made.

I've got a pretty sweet set up.. I'll take a pic tonight and post it up tomorrow

ZUKIMON 02-17-2009 05:08 PM

Sweet. I was beginning to think that no one had 'em. :D I've looked at the ball mounts, and I just don't see anywhere to put something like that. ;)

Dave 02-17-2009 08:00 PM

i recently aquired a tomtom unit and my fist thought was that i could zip strip it to my triple clamp

ZUKIMON 02-17-2009 10:47 PM

That's what I have; the TomTom One. I love it for what it is and it sure as hell gets me where I am going. I really found out how usefull it was the first time that I had to go to Atlanta for Hyundai training. Dayyyyyyyuuuuuuummmmmmmm is that place screwy to a hillbilly like me! I made it where I was going with no problems what so ever and never missed an exit. ;)

derf 02-18-2009 10:23 AM

i got the tom tom one too, havnt bought it yet, but i found very good looking mount from ram mounts that looks very secure

Dave 02-18-2009 10:52 AM

i only did some casual searching last night but i found a vent mount that comes with a detachable clip that ought to work the way i want with some slight modification

deals gap dragon slayer 02-18-2009 05:09 PM

Ram Mounts are definitely the way to go with GPS units... I forgot my camera at home.. Will get the pics up tomorrow

Ding ding ding.

I don't have any pictures handy at work. I'll post some up tonight when I'm at home.

Dave 02-18-2009 05:26 PM

that post mount looks sweet, but i def dont need all that articulation. just something to hold it to the fork

The Ram Mounts are reliable and sturdy. I personally wouldn't trust my electronics to anything else. Are you sure you want to take a chance on watching your GPS bouncing down the road behind you?

I have Ram mounts for my GPS and satellite radio. I'm a die-hard fan of Ram Mount products.

the important word here is aquired ;) in the army sense :) ;) and from my time as a tanker im fanatical about things being tied or zipped down (i also was the first mofo to run over someone else's things that werent)

ZUKIMON 02-18-2009 07:03 PM

I've already lost a nice Garmin GPS/FRS unit last fall due to a failed mount. :( I haven't looked up Ram Mounts yet, but I will Google them right now. In the meantime, this looks promissing to make one from.........

ZUKIMON 02-18-2009 07:24 PM

Ok, so if I get this:

http://products.ram-mount.com/rammou...r=RAM-B-309-1U

And this:

http://products.ram-mount.com/rammou...r=RAM-HOL-TO4U

I should be good to go? This is just as cheap as the ebay link but I had no idea that the holder from them would be this secure.

I could just get this for the mount and put it on the bars for a MUCH cleaner look. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a u-bolt. ???

G-Rex 02-18-2009 07:31 PM

That would do the trick. Be attentive to where your gps would sit relative to everything though from the bar. You might need one of the extensions to get out of the way of things.

I use 2" (I think) maybe 3", extensions on mine. Puts everything exactly where I want them.

ZUKIMON 02-18-2009 08:09 PM

Yeah, the biggest thing that would help would to be able to have the bike here to take a good long look at and do some measuring. I'll try to work on that this weekend when I put on my tinted sheild. ;)

Do you really need those on the Trex?

Oops! Sorry 'bout that! Here are a couple! One shows cockpit view, the other from the side so you can see the mounts.

BEFORE anybody says it, YES, the XM is on Wang Chung, and YES, the max speed reading at the time was 112mph.

derf 02-23-2009 11:44 PM

Wheres the radar detector and the auto pilot?

ZUKIMON 02-24-2009 12:28 AM

Everybody have fun tonight..............everybody wang chung tonight!! :D Sorry :D

Great shot man. I should have just looked up your pics from AK. You had the same thing on then. ;) I just wonder how well this will work with mine, as it looks like your sheild is at less of an angle than mine is giving you more room to work with. ???

I'm using a Zero Gravity sport-touring windscreen, which is considerably taller than the stocker. There's no way I could run that setup as-is with the stock windscreen. It wouldn't fit.

And Derf, radar detector is hidden. ;) As for Auto pilot, well, the Throttlemeister has been proven to work well into triple digits. :D

nothing $40 at wallmart cant fix. and themlittle battery tenders you see in pepboys kick ass. cheapest one you can find are dead solid for bikes cars whatever

derf 02-24-2009 11:20 PM

They never last me more than a week or 2, and the battery is just a matter of me stopping to be lazy

Dave 02-24-2009 11:33 PM

dood you plug it into 110 not 220!

derf 02-24-2009 11:41 PM

but 220 gives double the power!!!!!

Dave 02-24-2009 11:43 PM

dare i say 440?

derf 02-24-2009 11:51 PM

I tried, to hook up two 220 volt plugs together, all it did was make me pee my pants when I licked the wires

Dave 02-25-2009 12:08 AM

ahh a shame. when we lived at the oil refinery in al daura the power would spike from 220 to 440 without any warning. extra exciting

deals gap dragon slayer 02-25-2009 09:41 AM

OK guys, I was gonna be a smart ass and just post up a picture of my 'gps'.... i just use painters tape to tape my planned route onto my tank. And then if i get lost I just use google maps on my cell phone to figure out where i need to go... I've been too busy to tape up the tank and take pics

derf 02-26-2009 12:07 AM

I just ordered the ram mount for my tom tom
