Any Silverado yeniouses on here?
My brother has an '11-'12 Silverado with a V8 (think the smaller one) with auto tranny. He had the oil changed last friday and the guy told him he wasn't going to check the tranny fluid because the tube seemed to be loose and the guy didn't want to screw anything up.
Well stuff like that doesn't register on my brothers brain so he's been driving his pickup since then (personal and company truck). He comes over and his pickup is making a squeaking/squealing noise that goes up with rpms. Does it in neutral or in gear. So he tells me the story and I grab the tranny dipstick to check the fluid level and HALF the tube comes out with the dipstick. :lol The dam thing has been broke for obviously longer than last friday when he had the oil changed. I was able to get the tube and dipstick back in and did my best to check the fluid level but there would be crap on the end so it was hard to tell what the level was at. The noise sounds just like a bad pulley but I know that's not it. When you're in front of the engine it sounds like it's at the front. Stand to the side and it sounds like it's the engine. Get underneath behind the front wheel and it sounds like it's between the engine and tranny. Can torque converters squeal? I've been around a car that had a bad torque converter but it never made any noise. |
If it's a trans noise, it sounds like the front pump. Right behind the torque converter.

Ok. I'll get to looking for a blow-up of the tranny.
|
Have the next oil change done at the dealer.
|
If he was a man, he'd do it himself.
|
problem is that bowtie on the front...

I'm all about doing things myself, but that's new enough it should be under warranty yet?
|
I do everything myself. My brother is the complete opposite of me.
My dad bought him a big craftsman tool set one christmas 3 years ago. I think the No2 phillips and flat head screwdrivers have been used. LOL |
They ended up replacing the cam, some lifters and the tranny dipstick tube. I'll have to get the paper work from my bro and see exactly whats on it. Since he takes his truck to get the oil changed, who knows why those things went out.

Valvetrain issues seem to be more of a Ford thing. (My fleet has about 1200 of them, so I've seen more than a few). It's a fairly common occurence right around 75k. Never heard of it in a newer Chevy, but not impossible. :idk: |
What do the lifters and the trans dipstick tube have to do with one another? I'm confused (just bought an Avalanche with likely the same motor)

Traded it in and got an eco boost.

Mostly, great power, but marginal at best mileage on highway. |
So far my bro likes the eco. Pulls the trailer fine. Gets low ro mid 20's, but hes got a heavy foot. Also running 86 octane.

Ford all the way, best quality of the Big Three. Only reason Chrysler has survived is because of their "thuggish/Peterbuilt-ish" styling that seems to be a hit with the "bros" as well as the "urban" crowd

got rid of my SD350 Dually a few months ago and bought Silverado 3500 with the 6.0 so far it seems to be a great truck.
BTW for the Mopar fans the oil dipstick on my Jeep Wrangler did the same thing. busted right in half when I checked the oil. Would have gone with another Ford this time but too many "new" things in their trucks plus they didn't want to deal on price. Guess they thought after owning 6 Fords in a row it was guaranteed I would buy another. |
Ford has gotten expensive and dealers arent letting off prices easy. Thats why my boss got the chevy cause he was able to make a deal.
