Thanks to Gas Man...

... I have a ton of cargo space.

My old tail bag was reaching the decade-mark and was getting decidedly ratty (it also used to be black but had been bleached to a grey-ish color; the same UV bleaching had already killed the rubber zipper pulls and was weakening the fabric):

Step one was to remove the Corbin pillion seat and put the stock one back on.

Comparison between the stock seat and the Corbin:

Checking the fit of the case on the stock seat:

The passenger grab handle caused the case to be too far forward (the chips are from when some kid knocked my bike over):

I briefly considered removing the grab handle, however, the handle also has the lip which accepts the tab from the seat:

Test fit with a block of wood which brought it up enough to get it back further:

Test fit/measuring:

From the front (to get an idea of how wide it is):

Drilled and bolted (3rd hole is for the latch that plugs into the bike which I had to swap from the Corbin seat):

I built a frame out of faring strip to elevate it and get it to go back and up the grab handle so it is out of the way to the rider (i.e. me):

Finished mounting:

(the Sargent seat I have on there is used and has a small tear in it which is next on my list of things to fix).

Moved the top foam to the bottom for now:

I now have enough room for my laptop, shoes/coat (for work), etc or as a place to store my gear if I go someplace and don't want to lug it around. The case has 2 holes for locks.

I also positioned it just far forward enough that it is a killer backrest for long rides (my lower back gets all effed up when I have nothing to lean against) while being out of the way if I move forward on the saddle for more agressive riding.

Next steps: I am going to paint the fairing strip frame black so it matches the seat and the case and then throw some wood screws in there instead of the current brad nails. I'll also replace the bolts with 4 inchers instead of the 5's that I put in there and then dremel off the remaining thread.

Thanks, Gas!

That's awesome! I'm so glad it worked out!

It looks like a much better life for the case than sitting under my desk at work!!!

You planning on making some pad to mount to the bottom of it, so you can pimp lien against it instead of the hard case?

I have an old gel pad that I'm thinking of hot gluing to it. Want to ride with it a bit first to make sure I don't have to move it back at all.

I saw a sv the other day like yours with a bolt on tail pack, side cases too, it all bolted to the removable rear seat

Hmmm - wonder how they did that?

Steel supports that were bolted to the seat pan, extending off the sides and down just past the bike, then he had pads that sat on the rear footpegs to take the weight of the seat pan and keep the assembly from shifting or rocking side to side. The whole thing (quite heavy when full) just un-clips off the tail with the turn of a key and pulls right off.

Hmmmm, more wheels turning...

Yep, just need two more of those mounted vertically like saddle bags and you have plenty of room

Particle Man 06-25-2011 08:34 PM

It seems kinda bulky but damn does it hold a ton of shit

But why would you want a side open saddlebag? I never understood that.
