I know nothing about his particular bike, but my guess is that the oil cooler is a counter-current heat exchanger using coolant as the cooling medium. The damage to the unit probably punctured the cooling jacket, so now there is oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil. Whatever the case, it sounds like a mess. Lots of flushing out will be required at this point.
