Just take a look a something as simple as what's supplying the water. There is plastic, ductile, copper, galvanized, stainless, lead, and wood water mains. I'm sure there is some nasty heavy metals just in the piping delivering it to your house. When there is a water main break, try to see if you can find a piece of the pipe laying around, most of the time it's choked down by sediment inside the pipe. If you have old copper pipes, I'm sure they used some lead based solder.
Sorry to say, unless you live in a bubble, your going to be in contact with some chemicals/ metals that probably aren't so great if you consume a large amount. But in your average amount that you would drink or eat then you'll probably be just fine.
