It's actually a CB550

im pretty sure the problem either has to do with the starter or the transmission. when i try to start it electrically, it just clicks and when i try to kick start it, i get about 3/4 of the way down before the kick start just stops. i know it's not the battery because ive fully charged it

Does the engine actually turn for that 3/4 of kick lever movement? I'm not familiar with that bike so this is just my gut feeling, but it sounds like it may have a seized engine. I would still look in to parts and mods (big bore kit?) to see what can be done if the bike is the right price. Buy it with the assumption it has a seized motor. If it doesn't it is a bonus.

Yep.

That almost makes sense, except for the transmission part.

If it was truly seized, you wouldn't be able to kick it at all, let alone 3/4's of the way. If he's able to kick it 3/4's of the way repeatedly, the problem is more likely with the kickstarter itself (broken teeth, fucked up spring).

I'm thinking that there is enough play that the kick starter doesn't catch until the 3/4 mark, then doesn't budge.

If it were simply a fubar'd kicker, the electric starter should turn the motor.

Of course he may have "fully charged" a worthless battery and totally ruined my theory.

The battery is a liar...

You're right, he could have surface charge, but no amps to back it up.

I could see maybe a 1/4 turn worth of play, but 3/4? Nah. Not buying it. (the theory, not the bike).

Troy, for me it's a no go with the 550 motor. Too much weight without enough power. I would be tempted to squeeze a CB750 motor into it, or go the opposite direction, and put a CB350 in there, and save on weight.

Decisions, decisions...
