biggest issue i have with mine is fighting peeps for my jdm ceramic white dualshock3

Mine needed replacement on day 2. It's been a champ ever since, except for a weird random tick sound every now and then.

Sounds like it's in the hard drive area. It's not loud and not frequent and doesn't interfere with game play or playback of movies yet. If it's still an issue, I'll do a warranty thing on it with Sony before it expires and get it fixed/replaced, or possibly look into dropping a larger hard drive in there myself.

I haven't owned a 360 for exactly this reason, I have seen the ring and I didn't even buy one.

The fact that this even needs a tread is a sign that you probably don't want to buy one.
