It was a far cry from my trip in 2006 to Key West and Nova Scotia where I was on the road for 24 days I think it was, and only had to get a hotel room twice.

Actually, I'd imagine that he was referring to the fact that because of his superior online friend making skills, he was able to procure lodging with various friends on his subsequent trips across the country. Rather smart and also frugal of him as well.
