I've crossed the plains numerous times. The way to do it (if you have the time), is take the secondary highways... like U.S. 24, 36, 136, 50, etc. Enjoy the small towns, the country diners, the historical markers, etc. If you super slab it and fight with the 18 wheelers and wind, the quality of the ride goes real fast.
