a local place wants 50 to mount and balance my tire with the wheel still on. 25 if i take it off for them.
1.) is that a good deal? and
2.) is taking the back wheel off something i can do myself?

sounds about right, if you have to ask, then i'd stay away from it.

ask the shop if you can watch and learn

you'll also need a rear stand, to take the back wheel off, and a ft stand if you're going to take the ft wheel off.

He was implying that "if you have to ask" if removing the rear wheel is something you can do, then you should "stay away from it." I have to agree, mainly because if you don't get the alignment right, bad things can happen. I second the idea of asking the shop if you can hang around and watch. And yes, the price sounds about right.

if youre not too far from LI you can stop by my place and I can swap the tires. I have my own changer and th etools and stands. Once yo usee the wheels removed once or twice its prety easy.
