Having done a few hours of research, my opinion is this: avoid buying this case. You should buy a luggage system. Buying a bag by itself means that you need to find a rack to mount on your bike and then mount the bag to the rack. It's easier to just get a bag + rack system that is built for your bike.

If your bike/scooter already has a large rack, this bag will work great. But it's a pain for an SV because there's no good rack that will fit it. I could look into a custom rack as described above but I just want to save others the trouble of having to do the same.

As a side note, anyone know anyone in Austin that will custom fab a rack as described above?

If you were up in my neck of the woods I would be glad to help you with the rack build thingy.

Any thoughts on how this would hold up it it were to be mounted vertically along side the tail of a bike? Or is this the type of bag that should only be mounted horizontally so that the door opens up?

I am still contemplating buying 2 of them to make saddlebags

My BMW bags open the same way on the side and I have no problems. If the bags are good and waterproof and latch well, I don't see them being that bad for side cases.

What I do recommend if you go that way, get some bags that fit them as close as possible to the size. I use Kathy Journey bags for my side cases that are made specifically to fit my cases.

Appreciate the sentiment.

No idea. I have no previous experience with luggage.

It's a pretty big trunk to mount on the side. Maybe if you had something big like an R1200 but it's a bit much for the SV IMO. YMMV.
