I'm convinced that minivans should require a special freakin' license.

Any injuries?

RACER X 08-27-2009 12:54 PM

um failure to control veh. ticket woulda been given to you in TX.

pauldun170 08-27-2009 01:04 PM

How much UNDER the speed limit was the Minivan traveling when it entered your path?

RACER X 08-27-2009 01:12 PM

and how much OVER were "you" traveling?

Yamerhaw 08-27-2009 01:18 PM

yeah cause Racer X teaches MSF and knows everything

Amber Lamps 08-27-2009 01:18 PM

Aw come on guys... she got cut off may mean that the van came in from a side street...

Yea we should be the last ones to automatically blame sport bike riders for crashes. The general public takes care of that for us everyday.

and rides alot of city miles vs country bumpkins........

isn't that how it is in your state? you hit the back of a car, it's the rear cars fault?

Actually if a vehicle moves into your lane and causes you to hit them, the black and white rule of hitting the back of a car no longer applies.

Oh, and congratulations on riding so many city miles. That's amazing.

PhiSig1071 08-27-2009 01:35 PM

Sorry you crashed. That sucks.

That is what this thread was about, right? I couldn't tell with the e-pissing contest going on.

It's not "automatically" your fault, there are possible mitigating circumstances.

Um this isn't a single vehicle accident, Bro... I know that sport bikes get into a lot of single vehicle accidents and I've heard the "gravel" excuse plenty of times myself BUT that doesn't mean that every accident, regardless of circumstances is the rider's fault. I just don't appreciate the guilty until proven innocent POV when it comes to sport bike riders.

Anyway, I hope that you are all right and that you and your bike are back on the road asap!

pauldun170 08-27-2009 01:44 PM

Fuck that..accidents happen. She's up here posting so she's ok.

What can we learn from the accident? What can be shared?

I will say whenever I hear someone say they were involved in a motorcycle accident, my first question is "What dumbass thing were you doing?"

Minivan cut her off, and she locked up the brakes?
What the hell was the speed difference that you locked up the brakes and where the hell was your buffer zone? Where you scanning? Checking cage mirrors as you over taking people?

HokieDNA01 08-27-2009 01:58 PM

Sorry to hear about your spill Zippiechickie. I am always weary of vans/minivans because they have horrible blind spots and are often filled with distracted drivers/kids. Hope you heal up and get your bike fixed and back on the road soon.

Yea, I went for a ride with my gf yesterday and I counseled her on staying away from minivans and suvs. I told her to avoid staying off their sides if possible and to never remain at their corners. I explained that she was the rabbit and as the rabbit it was her responsibility to look out for and avoid danger!

karl_1052 08-27-2009 02:04 PM

I almost got taken out by a lady in a black Sedan DeVille last night. She cut right in front of me while changing lanes without even looking.(parking lot speeds)

ITS ALWAYS THE GRAVELS FAULT, we have established that already

Too much jumping to conclusions here, theres not that much detail she gave so its easy to speculate.

And like the gravel I will always blame the minivan ;)

you can attone by stocking up on generators and selling them at a premium to people in their time of need.

That, and say 10 'Hail Eds', and all will be forgiven, and you will once again be allowed to ride only the way Ed instructs you to.

azoomm 08-27-2009 03:51 PM

How horrible. Accidents suck - hitting objects with your motorcycle sucks - I'm so sorry that happened, and I'm very glad you're alright.

As a tip - when you approach a vehicle that is at a stop perpendicular to your path of travel, watch the vehicle's wheels rather than the entire box. Unless said vehicle has spinners, you will be able to determine if they are rolling much easier than watching the big box.

There ARE such things as accidents. It is our own personal responsibility to be able to minimize accidents happening to us by being aware of our surroundings or path of travel; and setting our own pace able to maneuver should something happen.

Also, try to make "eye contact" with the driver. Slow down if you are unsure that they see you and cover your brakes just in case!!! B I O N, I do this everyday and it has saved my ass many times.

tached1000rr 08-27-2009 04:52 PM

Eye contact doesn't work - they look right *through* you. :panic:

Homeslice 08-27-2009 05:49 PM

If it was only your rear tire that locked up (most likely), then try relying on your front brake alot more. Go to a track day and do some braking drills. The front brake will make the bike stand up WAY before the front tire would ever lock up, unless of course there's gravel or an oil spot, which is rare. Keep in mind however that the more front brake you use, the less rear brake you should use, because your weight is transferring to the front and therefore the rear tire can lock up more easily. In the twisties I use the front brake ONLY.

Dave 08-27-2009 06:05 PM

that sucks zippie hope you are ok, my first and only stoppie was caused by a dipshit in a minivan not paying attention

Tmall 08-27-2009 06:17 PM

Always a horrible situation.

I had one merge into me so hard that I had to veer into the oncoming lane and gas it. It was my closest call. This was on a 4 lane crowded bridge during rush hour. Flexin can attest to how dangerous it is. I missed the oncoming car by feet, and I could practically feel her mirror on my shoulder.

And of course everyone is glad she's ok.

Actually, unless you're bedridden an injury wouldn't keep someone from posting on the internet.

And if you're genuinely concerned about helping people (), try being less condescending and drop the douche bag attitude:

zippychickie636 08-28-2009 03:45 PM

first of all, I am fine. concusion and bruises. i'll live. my bike is fairly lucky also seems to be major cosmetic damage..and that's it (broken left mirror, snapped left footpeg, amputated left turn signal, etc). This is the situation: I was going 40 in a 35..the van was on a sidestreet.. and pulled out as I was about one foot from the sidestreet. I'm well aware I shouldn't have been going 40 in a 35, I should have expected the van to be a douche...If people want to critique my riding skills thats cool, but it's not like i'm saying im perfect and the minivan should get it in the ass...im saying I got in a crash...that's all....

ps thanks for all the good wishes those of you who offered them :)

also no, I didn't get any tickets...

Funny thing is I dress pretty boring.....Just business-casual shlep most of the time........I suck at buying clothes and end up returning half the shit I buy. Had no fashion sense as a kid....... Wore highwater pants all the time, black belts with brown shoes or even white running shoes, white socks all the time  Only reason I make so many comments about fashion is because it's my way of getting revenge against everyone who made fun of me as a kid
