Seattle cop punches woman in face during routine jaywalking stop (VIDEO)

A teen took a fist to the face by a cop, all because he stopped her for jaywalking.

Investigators in Seattle are reviewing the incident, which was captured on video, but the president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild argues the use of force was justified.

"He did nothing wrong," Rich O'Neill said, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "If anything, I think he maybe waited a little too long to engage in force because I think he was trying to defuse the situation."

But "it was obvious from the audio anyway of the two individuals that they were not going to be calmed down."

The incident began when an unnamed police officer spotted a teen jaywalking across Martin Luther King Jr. Way South around 3:10 p.m., according to a report on the Seattle Police Department Web site.

As he approached the 18-year-old male, the officer witnessed four females do the same thing at the same spot on the road, about 15 feet from a pedestrian crosswalk.

"The officer instructed the females to step over to his vehicle," officials said. "They were verbally antagonistic."

When one of them, a 19-year-old, began to walk away, the officer approached her and escorted her back.

"The female subject began to tense up her arm and pull away from the officer while yelling at him," police said.

The two argued, and the officer attempted to cuff her. That is when, according to officials, another of the teens interceded.

"The second female subject placed her hands on the officer's arm, causing the officer to believe she was attempting to physically affect the first subject's escape," police said.

A crowd had gathered around the officer by that time, and one witness captured much of the altercation on video.

As the officer and the 17-year-old struggled, the teen can be seen pushing the officer, who then responds by punching her in the face.

The crowd reacted with shock, and a voice is heard saying, "Are you serious?!"

Someone pulled the 17-year-old away, and the police officer proceeded to try to handcuff the 19-year-old.

"Do not struggle," the cop orders the woman during the video.

Backup eventually arrived, police said, at which point the teen who was punched was handcuffed. She was later examined by medical personnel.

"You obviously have to take into context everything that occurred from the point that the officer did make contact with the individuals until the situation ended," said Deputy Chief Nick Metz to King 5 News.

Metz noted there were some "concerns about the tactics the officer used."

"There will be a thorough investigation into this incident," said Police Sgt. Sean Whitcomb, according to Komo News.

EpyonXero 06-16-2010 04:55 PM

The cop definitely needs some takedown training and I think the punch to the face was probably a bad idea but I dont think he should be suspended, the girls were clearly resisting arrest.

Agreed, at that point when he punched there were 2 people on him, and the punch got one of them away. All he really had to do though the whole time is droped her to the floor, he would have been justified 100% and could even have claimed it was an accident.

pdog 06-16-2010 05:03 PM

Looks to me like that cop was 100% in the right in this case.

No, the punch was excessive, but justified.

What happened to cops' vaunted "hand to hand combat" training?

Surely with all their "training" (note the quote marks), they could do something other than punching a girl in the face.

It's the same thing with tazers......Lazy cops taking the easy way out.

udman 06-16-2010 05:16 PM

This. There is a better way than a punch to the face.

defector 06-16-2010 06:00 PM

A punch to the face.
90% of the time, it works every time.

Kaneman 06-16-2010 07:09 PM

It is clear that the officer was intimidated and embarrassed by the woman, which makes him pathetic as a man and even more so as an officer of the law. I mean really dude? Can we give these guys a basic Jiu Jitsu class or something?

That said, the woman had some force coming either way, so I don't feel bad for her and wouldn't cheer her on in a lawsuit or anything. Really bitch, pushing a cop with both arms like that? Should've listened to your friends dumbass.

lauralynne 06-16-2010 07:23 PM

he was instinctively reacting to being pushed. He probably should 'retrain' his instincts - it's his job - but in this case...for christ's sake, the fact that he didn't keep punching her shows great restraint on his part! The fact that she's 17 or black wasn't ANY part of the equation - the officer was instinctively reacting to a physical altercation.

There's rumors of a (civilian) gun being on the scene as well - we'll see what comes of that.

Kaneman 06-16-2010 07:33 PM

It's so sad when we view a grown and trained man punching a woman in the face as "showing great restraint."

Homeslice 06-16-2010 07:36 PM

You know I just thought of another thing.......Right or wrong, it's about time some women realized that just because they're "the fairer sex" doesn't give them the right to challenge cops in ways that a man would never get away with. If a man got all up in a cops face, arguing with him and shit, it'd be seen as a "threat" and he would get cuffed. But a woman can do the same and nothing happens because "oh that's just how women are, they're emotional"

I bet Jessie and Sharpton creamed their pants when they saw this video. Taking bets on who makes the first public statement.

"Please stop boss". Haha, I bet someone has recieved an ass kicking from the police before.

Crazy bitch got it easy. Imagine if someone like me (225lb white guy) tried that shit. My mother fucking ass would be full of vent holes or if I"m lucky just a tasering and face slammed on the ground.

And the cop is on MLK and the worst crime they have there is Jaywalking? Shit, I won't dare step foot on MLK here in Atlanta so obviously the police have done a fine job there.

He was prolly there looking to make a few quick arrests and could get a search of someone who looked (black) like a druggie and he could have an easy bust, so he got her on jaywalking which is pretty weak and she fought back. Thats my guess

pauldun170 06-16-2010 09:48 PM

Justified BUT the officers needs to go back to the academy. It took him WAY to long to get her under control, he lost his situational awareness and had no control.

We have borderline midget obese slobs on NYPD and they could get that girl cuffed quicker WHILE calling for backup (taser free thank you).

While driving through Atlanta (not far from MLK) today I had an experience that made me think about this. I had someone just start jaywalking without a thought to look for cars. I had to get on the brakes and so did everyone else. I wonder if she pulled that shit. I don't know what it is about ghetto areas but no one will dare touch a crosswalk.

Fuck if you want to stop people from coming from Mexico to the United States don't build a wall. Paint a giant crosswalk from coast to coast.

That street is WICKED busy - they built a pedestrian bridge. They didn't use it. Jaywalking is ticketed a lot around here so it's no surprise they got busted. The girl who got punched interferred where she didn't belong. Nobody deserves to get punched. But if you SHOVE an officer, you have to expect him to defend himself somehow. He didn't know she was 17. I have to wonder if this would even make the news if it had been an over 18 year old male (of any color).

Not suprising. Using the pedestrian bridge is giving into the man.

If it was 2 males they'd probably be shot (if lucky by a taser). Which is why none of the guys ever got really involved other than trying to pull the dumb bitches off. Because it was 2 females one got a punch in the face then wrestled with.

She deserved to have a knot jerked in her azz but an overhand right was too much. Come on officer...where are those 'soft hand techniques' you were taught ? A finger or wrist lock or even a sweep and takedown...cuff her and stuff her but an overhand right(?)...come on man...you lost your composure there for sure.

I was thinking the same thing. A lone cop, surrounded by multiple people, one of whom is interfering with him while he's trying to take a subject into custody? Thirty years ago he'd have pulled his gun.

While I do believe that the cop should be better trained in take down methods, if I was to come home at 17 and tell my father that I pushed a cop, my father would have come unglued an given me a real ass kicking. :spank:

Was that girls behavior rational? To charge towards and then put her hands on an officer of the law attempting to subdue someone else at the time?

I don't understand...you seem like a reasonable person sometimes....but you have an almost pathological abhorence to authority.

If you can't see this girl

a) initiated the incident
b) escalated the incident by her repeated refusal to submit and
c) all but DEMANDED some form of physical response from the cop

then that's on YOU...any reasonable person would fully expect to get a harsh slap down from a cop after doing what she did.

Gots to agree.

I'm not a fan of cops over-stepping their boundaries but this guy didn't.

His failure was not taking the first chick down hard enough to subdue her immediately.

No, only when they interact with cowards.

Again, I'm not defending the women, but we should demand that our police are above that type of behavior.

What response from that officer would have been "non-cowardly" and "appropriate" to that situation, in your opinion?

I'm not trying to start an argument...I'm genuinely curious.

I have to agree with KSGregman (and others) on this one. He was struggling with the first girl. The second girl decided to insert herself in to the situation. He needed to remove one of the two of them from the situation as quickly as possible. What type of behavior do you think we should demand the officer use to do so?

Papa_Complex 06-17-2010 01:49 PM

Agreed. I don't expect anyone, police officer or otherwise, to react reasonably to an unreasonable situation.

Homeslice 06-17-2010 03:03 PM

Officers don't get trained for nothing.......they're supposed to USE their training.........So how about subduing the suspect so that they can be taken down and cuffed............instead of being forced to punch, taze, or shoot them?

They work for US, not the other way around. And most normal taxpayers expect cops to subdue suspects in ways that have the least possibility of serious injury or death (yes tazers can kill).

Edit: I still think she got owned  Women of a certain race think they can get away with anything

That would be the training that teaches them how to take on a subject, one-on-one, and take him down with minimal chance of injury, or how to act in concert with other officers in order to do the same?

I'll agree that he seemed to have a lot more trouble subduing the first girl than he should have. If anything it looked like he was trying to be too gentle with her. Regardless, he did not have the first girl subdued when the second girl decided to get involved. I don't know how he could have dealt with that part of the situation much better than he did.

z06boy 06-17-2010 04:33 PM

I don't think he should have punched her in the face with an overhand right BUT he should have already taken the first girl down and cuffed her...even if it was done harshly...bend her wrist or fingers far enough and she'll likely drop...if not...sweep her feet out from under her and slam her...if that doesn't work...kick her in the side of the knee...if that doesn't work then taze her azz and screw whomever doesn't like it...the b!tch shouldn't be resisting.

Although I don't agree with the punch...he's not a coward just because he lost it for a second and threw the punch. How does that make him a coward ? If anything he makes him overly aggressive or a bully. A coward ? Nope.

As far as dealing with the 2nd girl...same for her as I stated above...he11 pepper spray her.

I do get tired of women breaking bad and then expecting to be handled with kid gloves BUT again...the overhand right...just don't agree with that...but he's not a coward...a coward would have back peddled or went and jumped in the car or something imho with that many people standing around or maybe pulled his service pistol and shot somebody.
