Canadian courts= teh retarded

http://www.parentdish.com/2009/04/08...-punishment%2F

long story short. a 6th grader successfully sued her father for grounding her from a field trip

Sixxxxer 04-09-2009 12:25 PM

Fucking French

Papa_Complex 04-09-2009 12:49 PM

I agree with the thread title, though this would be just as likely to happen in English speaking Canada as in Quebec. Parents' rights to discipline their children are now effectively non existent.

Method 04-09-2009 12:55 PM

Holy hell.

I would be insanely pissed if I were him - the courts just undermined any authority he had over his daughter.

My first reaction would likely be to say that her mother can have her.

I would give her ass to the judge, if you want to fucking make the decisions for me on how to raise my child, you pay for/raise her.

Flexin 04-09-2009 01:03 PM

Thats bullshit. If she can make her own decisions then she should have to start paying her own way.

Can you put your kid up for adoption at any age? I'd do it...and I'd be done with her. Of course how the hell did she get to this point?

Amorok 04-09-2009 07:51 PM

He could just drop her off at a hospital, or is that just here?

Antwanny 04-09-2009 09:23 PM

thats when you know you have failed as a parent

Kids always try to push limits. I think it's the liberal judges that permitted this to happen.

Dragonpaco 04-09-2009 11:53 PM

where did she get money for a lawyer?

Apoc 04-10-2009 12:02 AM

while I agree Canadian courts suck balls, you guys shouldnt get up too high on your horse. You make very little money suing in Canada (2500$ max for whiplash). As opposed to the millions you can make for hurting yourself while robbing someone elses property down there...

You make a valid point. And i will adjust m judgement based upon your arguement which i find quite enlightening. I guess i could have said i agree

She applied for a legal aid lawyer and used the same one who represented her during her parents' divorce proceedings.

Every now and then we have a stupid result like that here, though I agree that they are less common.

The level of award in the US is generally at what we see as being ridiculous levels because their medical costs are so much higher than ours. Imagine having to shell out $1M a year for home medical care for the rest of your life, because you have been crippled. Up here the largest portion of that would be covered by government.

Particle Man 04-10-2009 10:41 AM

Unfortunately, I can see that happening here too :(

She probably made Daddy pay for it :zowned:

Tmall 04-10-2009 01:49 PM

So trying to ground her and having the courts say no means he failed as a parent?

Talk about seeing what you want to see..

IMO it means the courts failed at letting the parent BE a parent...

Pussification of the WORLD FTL

And legal costs. Seeing as how almost half the award goes to the attorneys in most cases.

Funniest thing is class-action suits against businesses........The person who came up with the idea of the lawsuit typically only gets a pittance, like $10-50K, while his attorneys get millions. I guess some people suck at negotiating.

to let your kid get the chance to sue you at that age means you fail

Pretty much.

I think most people are focused on themselves these days, and haven't put much thought into the right ways to raise children.

Tmall 04-10-2009 03:08 PM

 is all I can really say...

I believe in personal accountability, but sometimes you just end up with an asshole kid.

And when the law steps in to stop you from parenting, how can you do anything about it?

Anyway, ill bow out.

You mean perhaps like taking away priviledges for bad behaviour?

I think my lawyer took about 25% after my car accident.

I wasn't objecting to that, I'm saying if they had a successful, "normal" parent-child relationship, the kid would never even think of suing his parents. That's just fucking stupid IMO.
