The Biscuit Barn

Why is it that the most run-down, dirty-looking shit holes can often have the best food?

I must have passed this place hundreds of times before today, never stopping in. The first 6 months we lived here, I thought it was an abandoned building. Turns out, it's only open for breakfast and they sell pretty much one thing - buttermilk biscuits. They'll give you whatever you want on it, but biscuits is what they do.

This morning I didn't feel like cereal, or eggs, or a piece of fruit - I wanted something different. So I decided to risk the hepatitis (seems I could catch it just by standing near the place) and hit the "drive-thru" of Guy's Biscuit Barn. Ordered a chicken biscuit and holy Cheesus.....this is the best fucking biscuit I've ever had in my life. Flaky, yet still slighly crumbly....but it doesn't fall apart in your hand like most do. Man, that shit was good. I'll probably have a really small lunch today, because I'm still full after that. I never would have thought such a shithole made such good biscuits.

Trip 05-28-2009 09:10 AM

because that's all they got to entice people. dives are awesome.

Agreed.

LeeNetworX 05-28-2009 09:14 AM

There's a dive in a strip plaza back in Fort Lauderdale called "Alligator Alley". Dark, dirty, smelly and sticky little bar that serves lunch on Fridays. We'd go there every couple of months for lunch and have some of the best cajun food.....then go to the clinic for some booster shots after.

Werd.

Plus they're not worried about how the place looks... they know they make good shit, and they know word of mouth will bring more people in the door.

I know you guys have Dreamland BBQ up in Atlanta now, and it might've changed since they've gone bigtime, but the first time I went to one, it was somewhere in the middle of shitville... it was a hole in the wall, they served their food on styrofoam plates, had rolls of papertowels on the tables, and it was basically ribs, ribs, ribs...and oh yeah, ribs. They managed to have a couple sides (including FANTASTIC banana pudding), but you went for the ribs. And they were the best fucking ribs you'd ever put in your mouth. But again, total dive...

LeeNetworX 05-28-2009 10:11 AM

Never heard of Dreamland. Best BBQ place we found up here so far is Williams Bros. in Canton.

Trip 05-28-2009 10:36 AM

The one thing I have learned about people saying what is the best BBQ is that you never listen to them. BBQ is such a wide open food with many varieties and different types/tastes of sauces and people's preference to these many types makes it stupid to listen to anyone about what is the best BBQ. Reason for this rant is I recently went to the supposed best BBQ in near Bristol, the famous dive one that all the NASCAR drivers go to when the races are in town and it was some of the shittiest food I ever had eaten. I am still pissed off about spending money there. GRRRRRRR!

Kind of like Redezvous in Memphis. Very well-known and everyone says how great it is.... IMO It's OK, nothing spectacular.

Rider 05-28-2009 10:40 AM

Speaking of BBQ. Dixies BBQ in Bellvue, WA is fantastic. Sandman's here in GR is outstanding. I bet Tigger has been there a few times. It's in the worst neighborhood in town. Down in the hood, but the food in amazing. Rib Tips.... :whatwhat:

Yeah, I have found a lot of the real famous places around here seriously overhyped. There was this catfish place that is a dive too, apparently it use to have a catfish pond where they farm raised them. Might of been good back then, but apparently the owners got lazy and now just buy frozen catfish. I could of gotten a better meal out of the kroger freezer. Disappointing.

Don't reveal that place to the net. It's best kept a secret. There is a reason the dragon sucks now.

I think they opened one in Roswell... but like I said, now that they've gone "big city," they might suck.

Very true.

I like dry rubbed ribs...and that's what is so fucking amazing at Dreamland. But if you like your ribs dripping in sauce, you'd hate them there.

Have you tried Two Brothers in Ballground Lee? Not as good as they were 20yrs ago but still damn good Brunswick stew IMO.

My husband and I have the better BBQ discussion frequently. He's from Kansas City. I'm from Texas.

I prefer Texas BBQ mostly, but I love me some burnt ends when I'm in KC. nom nom nom

HurricaneHeather 05-28-2009 12:13 PM

Oh and dives are always the best. It's just a matter of knowing which ones are awesome and which ones are just crap. Word of Mouth FTW.

We went to a place called Pirate's Cove in Pass Christian, MS this weekend. It's in a yellow trailer. It was awesome.

Ok, well actually now I mean BOTH.... the pancake place YOU told me about... the other place, a friend of ours who'd just been up there told us about; we wanted to go there for my Bday, but then since cell service was so spotty, we could never get ahold of him while we were there to get the name. (I STILL don't know the name, so don't worry about me accidentally posting it  )

njchopper87 05-28-2009 04:34 PM

I love stumbling on small places I've never seen or heard of and walking out of the place saying to myself how the hell did I ever live without this place? It's rare, but they're out there. I guess that's one of the pros of bike rides across the states. You never know where you'll end up.

askmrjesus 05-28-2009 04:47 PM

I used to go to a great dive in Thailand. They only had one thing on the menu. Duck soup. The business model was very simple. You could have duck soup, or you could fuck off and eat somewhere else.

They hung dead ducks over a big pot, and when the steam from the pot was hot enough, the duck meat would fall in on it's own. When the duck was meatless, they hung up a new duck, and put more water in the pot.

The year or so that I ate there, I don't think that pot ever moved, or was cleaned. It's was just the same pot of soup, with new stuff in it.

I'm still not sure why eating duck that had been hanging in the hot Thai sun all day didn't kill me, but it was damn good soup.

I was on a job site in Greenville Mississippi a year or two ago and on the first night I asked the local Foreman where I could go grab some grub. He said if I like steak I should go check out Doe's. Be careful though, it's in a bad part of town and whatever you do, don't drive further down Nelson street than the restaurant is. Okay. I lived in Detroit for a while, so this sort of thing doesn't bother me.

I brought a co-worker with me and we found it okay. It's an old corner store turned into a restaurant. And I mean old. Run down, chipped paint, doors hanging off the hinges . . . and an armed guard standing out front. He kept an eye on everybody's cars parked along the street as there was no parking lot.

You enter through the run down, sticky kitchen and one of the guys working there handed me a beer out of the cooler on my way by. Once you get inside you see the exposed plumbing, exposed wiring, crooked floor, cheap little tables with red and white checkerboard table cloths on them.

They did have a small menu, but there wasn't much on it . . . and no prices. Hmm . . . oh well, the company is paying for it anyway so I guess it doesn't matter. Besides, how much could a couple steaks cost in a run-down joint like this?

Neither of us was very hungry, so we just got fillets, a potato, and a couple shrimp to go with it. The first thing they bring us is some of the home-made, cast iron skillet cooked toast. Toast, you ask? I'll tell you right now I have never had a piece of bread that compares to what she handed me. I could have eaten a loaf of that for dinner and been completely satisfied. Then came the steak & shrimp. Oh. My. God. Hands down, no exceptions, the best hunk of meat I've ever stuffed in my pie hole. Wow.

Then I got the bill. 2 fillets, 2 small side orders of shrimp, and 2 beers . . . $110.

I don't know if that counts as a dive due to the cost, but I'll tell you the place sure looked like a dive.

Here's a shot of the outside . . .

http://i40.tinypic.com/2mcg8s4.jpg

Here's an iside shot. We sat in the empty seat right there by the window . . . on the crooked floor and right IN the kitchen.

Homeslice 05-28-2009 05:33 PM

No prices on the menu? Guess they must enjoy having people constantly asking for the prices. Greenville MS isn't exactly Beverly Hills.

Krabill 05-28-2009 05:36 PM

It was 'spensive. I guess if you have to ask how much the t-bone is, you shouldn't be eating there.

Like I said, I just had the tiny little filet mingon and that with my 1 beer was over $50.

I'm guessing they knew you weren't locals.

You paid that month's rent and the rest of the patrons enjoyed the $9.95 Filet, shrimp and beer special.

LOL Tom and I used to live right down the street from the BBarn and thought the same thing! We finally stopped in and at least 2 Saturdays out of the month we would go eat some biscuits there before heading off to a garage sale or something. We are looking to move back to Cumming this winter and I can't WAIT to be close to the BBarn again. Damn fine fresh biscuits!!!! :rockwoot:

You have to go to OBs in McDonough. I've never had any better ribs in my life. Now another BBQ place I like is Fat Matt's BBQ near Cheshire and Peidmont. Maybe not the greatest ribs but the atmosphere and the blues they have playing is just win.

The Biscuit Barn. Are you talking about the place in Lawrenceville? They do have some good shit.

Of course if you want some damn good BBQ just hit up southside Atlanta and look for a restaurant with De or Da in the name. Such as "De best chicken in Da south"

Heard of it but never been there. When I'm down for work we sometimes will hit the Dixie Pig over off Old Dixie and Commercial(?). Tiny little place but pretty good.

This Biscuit Barn is in Cumming - the corner of Spot and Dr. Bramblett.

Have not tried OBs - we're never find ourselves in that area of the metro. There's a couple of decent places we've been to near my office in Alpharetta. Smoke Jack's is one of them. Then there's a chain BBQ place up off exit 13 that's pretty good - "Jack's and Dave's" or something like that. Can't recall the name just now.
