I would say $60K in NY is the equivalent of:
$50K in DC, Boston or San Francisco
$45K in LA
$40K in Chicago, Seattle, or Atlanta
$30K in average America
$23-25K in a podunk town in Mississippi, Kentucky or the Dakotas
But not $12K
