How about first figuring out the purpose for landing on the moon again? Articulate the benefits, and it needs to be more than simple exploration, because we've already been there done that. Pride alone isn't enough, hell a lot of people wouldn't pay attention unless we were going to Mars.

I bet my friend who works for NASA back when Bush was pushing this that it was a political maneuver. He wasn't buying it because money was flowing in but my gut feeling was that it the purpose of the initiative was to kill projects by diverting funds to a project that generates great footnotes to speeches by invoking the Apollo missions but offers no long term commitments to success.

"We're going to kill all these useful scientific programs so that we can put a man on Mars!!!"

(Well actually we are just going to kill programs because we don't like funneling money to NASA...and what better way to do that politically than to say that its going to our "Mission to Mars" program... talking points that are constituents can grasp...none of these "probes" to sample things that aren't in the Bible )

NASA has become a joke anyway. The top notch teams of 40 years ago that brought a man to the moon have been pounded away by the establishment's lack of funding and commitment to affirmative action.

I had an interview with NASA were I learned that they were specifically targeting disabled students for positions. All this from the mouth of the interviewer.

I know a couple engineers currently working at several NASA locations, who concur with this philosphy that is underway with the NASA leadership.
